Christopher Joyce, 23, and Clayborn Blair, 58, were visiting friends in the development when they became victims of what police believe to be a gang-related shooting. Joyce, who was to have graduated from Salem State College in two weeks, is pronounced dead at 12:03 a.m. on May 6, 2018, his mother’s birthday. He had recently posted on his LinkedIn profile, “My goal is to provide a vision for the one’s who look up to me. I will be the first person in my family to have graduated college, and that’s extremely important to me.” Joyce’s cousin, Eric Covil, later reflects, “His parents worked hard to give their son a way out of the lives they had. You can do everything right, but Boston just isn’t safe.” Blair, a U.S. Navy veteran, custodian at the Pine Street Inn, and father of three, was visiting one of his sons.
